Course Description

The Utility of Gender in Peace Support Operations Course (UGPSOC) is designed and developed in order to increase awareness and provide a conceptual understanding of gender issues in the security sector as well as the prevention of sexual violence in conflicts. It has a particular focus on peace support operations (PSO) and how peace support force (PSF) should understand women’s needs and their role as actors within the society they are tasked to protect.

Course Aim

 The course will provide students with a variety of backgrounds with the ability to apply a gender perspective and mitigation measures to counter CRSV in peace support operations (PSO).

Learning objectives

  • Illustrate international framework and guidelines related to gender mainstreaming in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Explain the importance of a gender perspective implementation through all phases of peace support operations (PSO);
  • Demonstrate the implementation of a gender perspective in all functional areas;
  • Explain the importance of addressing conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Summarize measures to address conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) in peace support operations (PSO).

Course Participants

  • Up to 30 participants;
  • Military officers (OF-1 – OF-4) and NCOs (OR-5 – OR-9) including all services, police, and civilians (mid-level decision makers);
  • Participants have to have at least 2, 2, 2, 2 of proficiency in English (as prescribed by STANAG 6001) or approximately B1 level in accordance with the Common European Frame (CEFR).

Remarks

The course is delivered by national and international instructors and subject matter experts. It is conducted under the supervision and with assistance from Nordic Centre for Gender in Military Operations (NCGM).

ADVANCED DISTANCE LEARNING

 

 

A pre-course recommendation for this Course is that student finishes ADL 169 – “Improving Operational Effectiveness by Integrating Gender Perspective (JKO New Version)” on NATO Partnership for Peace Consortium Advanced Distributed Learning Website. The student is expected to present the printed ADL Course Certificate to the Course Admin at PSOTC during the in-processing phase.
