Course Description

Although distinct nations are responsible for their pre-deployment training continuum, it is vital that staff officers and NCOs in tactical units are trained in the NATO approach to conducting peace support operations (PSO). Given the multinational and joint character of PSO, coherence, and interoperability between nations contributing troops to PSO have to be enhanced. Therefore, education and pre-deployment training of all military personnel on NATO doctrines, standards, and procedures for conducting PSO are imperatives for all nations contributing personnel to NATO-led PSO.

Course Aim

The aim of the course is to prepare nationally trained staff officers and NCOs for assignments in multinational tactical level HQ conducting NATO-led peace support operations (PSO).

Learning objectives

  • Explain the main elements of the conduct of NATO operations;
  • Explain the fundamentals of NATO-led peace support operations (PSO);
  • Describe the basics of NATO-led peace support operations (PSO) techniques and procedures;
  • Explain the legal framework of NATO-led peace support operations (PSO);
  • Explain the protection of civilians (POC) concept in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Explain the role of the military in child protection (CAAC) in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Explaining gender mainstreaming and the role of the military in response to CRSV in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Explain procedures related to cultural property protection (CPP) in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Explaining fundamentals of integrity challenges in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Explaining the execution of Security Sector Reform (SSR);
  • Illustrating Security Force Assistance (SFA);
  • Administer a Tactical Operations Centre (TOC) in peace support operations (PSO);
  • Manage information flow in a Tactical Operations Centre (TOC) in peace support operations (PSO).

Course Participants

  • Up to 40 participants;
  • Military officers (OF-2 – OF-4) and NCOs (OR-7 – OR-9) including all services;
  • Participants should be nationally trained in the military decision-making process or have working experience as staff officers/NCOs in national HQs;
  • Participants have to have at least 2, 2, 2, 2 of proficiency in English (as prescribed by STANAG 6001) or approximately B1 level in accordance with the Common European Frame (CEFR).

Remarks

The course is delivered by national and international instructors and subject matter experts.
