The Peace Support Operations Training Centre (PSOTC) of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AF BiH) has successfully concluded its Human Security Tactical Course, reinforcing regional military cooperation and enhancing the operational readiness of personnel from across the Western Balkans.

Held from 25 August to 2 September 2026 in Sarajevo and at the AF BiH Main Training Area Manjača, the course brought together 14 participants from three nations, including ten members of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina and four officers and non-commissioned officers from partner countries in the region. The initiative once again demonstrated the value of multinational training and collaboration in preparing military personnel for the complex challenges of contemporary operations.

The course was delivered by PSOTC in close partnership with the British Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, supported by the British Armed Forces and the Finnish Defence Forces International Centre (FINCENT). Designed for junior officers and non-commissioned officers, the programme aimed to strengthen the integration of Human Security principles into military planning and operational execution.

The course opening ceremony on 25 August was attended by Major General Mirsad Ahmić, Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina for Resources. Addressing the participants, he reaffirmed the strategic value of the Human Security initiative, developed through cooperation between the Ministries of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United Kingdom. He further noted the growing prominence of Human Security principles in modern military operations and peace support missions, emphasizing that the protection and wellbeing of affected populations are fundamental to operational effectiveness and mission success.

Throughout the programme, participants completed a comprehensive curriculum covering a range of key Human Security topics. These included the Protection of Civilians, Children and Armed Conflict, Conflict-Related Sexual Violence, Trafficking in Human Beings, Protection of Cultural Property, and Building Integrity in Operations. The training combined expert-led lectures, interactive discussions and scenario-based practical exercises, enabling participants to translate theoretical concepts into practical skills applicable to complex and dynamic operational environments.

The course concluded with a closing ceremony recognising the achievements of all participants. Speaking at the event, Colonel Damir Alibašić, Commandant of PSOTC, underlined the importance of the training in strengthening the practical application of Human Security principles during military operations. He also expressed appreciation to the British Embassy, the British Armed Forces and FINCENT for their continued partnership and support in the development and delivery of the programme.

In his remarks to the graduates, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Higgs, Defence Counsellor at the British Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighted the vital role of education and training in advancing Human Security as a core element of modern military operations. He further reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s strong commitment to supporting future Human Security training initiatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina that contribute to regional capacity building and cooperation.

The successful completion of the Human Security Tactical Course marks another important step in strengthening shared military capabilities and advancing regional cooperation. By bringing together participants from partner nations, the programme facilitated the exchange of professional knowledge and experience, enhanced mutual understanding, and fostered lasting professional networks among military personnel and security practitioners.

As PSOTC continues to expand its Human Security training portfolio, the course further reinforces the Centre’s role as a recognised Partnership Training and Education Centre (PTEC) and a regional hub for peace support operations training, contributing to more effective, inclusive and people-centred military operations.
